The Short Answer
Hamas and other groups took 251 hostages on October 7. Through military rescues and negotiated deals, all of them have now come home: the final 20 living hostages were released on October 13, 2025, and the remains of the last deceased hostage were recovered on January 26, 2026 — fulfilling Israel's promise to bring every one of them back.
A national mission
The hostages included infants, children, elders, women, soldiers and foreign nationals. Israel's commitment to the principle that no one is left behind united the country, and the yellow ribbon and the "Bring Them Home" movement became symbols worldwide.
Over two years, hostages returned through the November 2023 truce, the January–March 2025 deal, daring IDF rescue operations, and finally the October 2025 agreement under the U.S. peace plan. Many returned with accounts of starvation, abuse and captivity in tunnels.
The final chapter
On October 13, 2025, Hamas released the last 20 living hostages, and Israel released Palestinian prisoners as part of the deal. Hamas then returned the remains of deceased hostages slowly, in violation of its commitments. On January 26, 2026, Israel announced that the remains of police officer Ran Gvili, the last hostage, had been recovered, opening the way to the next phase of the ceasefire.
Dozens of hostages were murdered in captivity, including six young people executed in a Rafah tunnel in August 2024. Their memory remains central to Israel's resolve.
